you can find plenty of the old body style explorers in the junkyard. To do a 4wd conversion here are the major parts you need:

- Front axle assembly including all the various brackets and nuts and bolts to mount it to the frame. You will need to replace the independent suspension front end with the twin-traction beam (TTB) setup found in 4wd explorers like yours.

- Transmission with transfercase again you will need to find an 4wd explorer, preferably the same year as yours and obtain the transmission as well as the transfercase from it

- Crossmember when you get the tranny/t-case combo, remember to get the crossmember as well. You might be able to retain your stock crossmember as long as your new 4wd transmission is the same version as your stock one.

- Front and rear driveshafts your 4wd transmission with a transfercase on the end will be longer than your current 2wd transmission. Therefore you will need a shorter rear driveshaft. You will also need a front driveshaft since you don't have one anyways. Once again, get them out of a 4wd explorer the same year or body style as yours.

- Shifter assembly you will need the setup to shift in and out of 4wd. I don't know about the old body style explorers, but the 2nd gen ones use a turn knob to activate 4wd. You will need the shift mechanism / system from a 4wd explorer to put into yours.

Best place for all these parts are forums like these or junkyards. Pick N' Pull in VA beach and Always used auto in Chesapeake are good places to go. My list isn't a definate one, there will most likley be other little random nuts and bolts type stuff you will need to do the swap. That was the case when I did the swap on my cherokee. It takes alot of time and effort, but the end results are very rewarding. Doing the swap yourself will give you an incredible amount of knowledge about your vehicle that will be hard to get if you just go out and buy a 4wd vehicle.
