Not too familiar with the court system - I try to stay away as much as I can. Pretty sure though failure to appear instantly results in a warrant being put out for your arrest. When you go to court, you will probably be charged with a pretty hefty fine.
I'd recommend you show up with the confirmation letter showing that you sent the fax through, as they requested.
