hell, i'm sure it'd power wheelie just fine too. run it up to about 7-8k rpm in first, chop the throttle and then smack it open again. it'll come up.
There are lots of new guys riding them and posting that they're having problems pulling them up on gixxer.com. It's nearly a daily occurance that a noob makes a thread about having problems with them (k6/k7 600/750) coming up.
And yes, your on-off-on technique works great for bringing them up.
