The 2000GT is the first Sports car from Japan that arrived to the united states.... it has the 3M engine that is a 2.0L I6 DOHC with triple mikuni sidedraft carbs (joint project with Yamaha).... this engine has set the trademark for the Supras.... when the 1979 MK1 came out as a sports car level for the Celica base... it is equipped with a 4ME 2.6L I6 SOHC..... then in 1981 the 5ME engine came out with an increase of 0.2 L which makes it a 2.8L SOHC..... the supra became its own line as the toyota flagship car in 1982 as the Celica Supra aka MK2.... with a newly redesigned 2.8L DOHC I6 producing a 141 hp 145ft lbs.... this is the 5MGE engine.... then this I6 tradition goes on to the 7MGE, 7MGTE, on the MA70 chassis and the JZA80 came with the 2J engine platforms.... that is only in the US market.... if you want me to go on details on the aus, euro, japan market.... I would be happy to tell you the whole history of the supra....
and to let you all know.... japan market is not gonna be making any inline 6 engine no more.... the skyline would be getting a new V8 while the supra with also carry a 4.0L V8 in the near future.... there is no 5000GT..... the NSX would have a competition from Toyota as for a 4000GT.... a mid engine 4.0L 1UZ engine DOHC
