The Virginia Department of State Police is currently accepting applications for a Computer Operations Technician position in the Communications Division at State Police Administrative Headquarters in Chesterfield County.
DUTIES: Assists project manager with tasks of programming/configuring, testing, and issuing laptop computers to be used as mobile terminals in a law enforcement agency. Identifies and processes defective laptop computers, modems and other associated hardware for in-house or factory repair. Identifies suitable mounting locations in various Department vehicles and selects proper mounting solutions. Creates diagrams and text instructions by use of Microsoft Office applications. Performs data entry into existing databases for inventory tracking of laptop and modem hardware, assignment of server ports to each terminal, inventory and status of wireless provider IP addresses and future recall of user unique information. Performs data entry of new user information and security profiles; maintains current user profiles and access rights; maintains latest application updates in “MobileFlash” SQL server. Supplies diagrams, instructions, software as needed to resolve terminal problems; assists stockroom clerk with identifying and maintaining inventory of terminal accessories.
QUALIFICATIONS: Comprehensive knowledge of computer hardware, software, and various operating systems. Demonstrated experience maintaining and troubleshooting computers in a mobile environment. Basic understanding of wireless networks using CDPD and CDMA technologies to transmit/receive data from mobile terminal to fixed site server. Knowledge and experience in the use of common hand tools as well as test equipment including voltmeter, ohm meter, and cellular antenna analyzer. Degree in related field and/or related training/experience preferred. Must be eligible to apply for VCIN certification which requires either U.S. citizenship or having been a lawful resident of the U.S. for the past 10 consecutive years.
