If you asked me a 900 with a 1000 motor stuffed into it from 85 is going to be more of a headache and money pit then anything else. I think you should just bide your time and save your money until you can buy something that you are truely going to be happy with and will not be a maintenance nightmare. Do not rush into purchasing a bike just because you want one and even out of your apparent necessity it will most likely come back and bite you in the ass. Have you taken an MSF class or know how to ride currently?
I plan on taking that as soon as school lets out (in a few weeks). And I want to get a bike before it really warms up and prices start going up. I don't need a bike right now, I just will next year, and this summer is when I have the time to deal with the classes, and can afford to ride down to my buds house to get the bike ready. The way i see it is I get a bike now, and by the time I'm legal to ride, the bike will be ready. I appreciate the comments about the bike being a pain in the butt with the engine swap and all that, thats a good point.
