best years to get hp wise and ballpark price?

I don't think I can afford a newer M3, although I'd love to have one. Just looked it up, kbb on an '01 with 74k in excellent condition is 22k. I don't know if there is any markup on them at all though like there is with some other cars. I'm sure blah could shed some light.
