bringing your car as a freshman is fine so long as your willing to risk leaving it in the cage for weeks at a time... a few cars were broken into last year which would make me hesitate to have to leave my car there.

as for suspension, go with a nice coilover system, so if you find yourself scraping over everything you can just raise it back up a little bit.
