How about a Ford 2.3 turbo? The EFI 2.3s have 30# or 35# fuel injectors, inline or square style intakes (get gutted/ported), .390 or .400 lift cam, E6 casting exhaust manifold (get ported), and T3 turbo (rebuilt for $250 and get the turbine housing and exhaust elbow ported). All turbo blocks came with forged pistons. A large majority came with 5 speeds. A good tune up, k&n conical on the vane air meter, 3 inch exhaust and you will be amazed!
