It could be worse, I once had a rock puncture through the tread block on my SRT4's brand spanking new BFG KDW's. And those tires have THICK tread blocks.
Or, you could have been like me driving down the Pennsylvania Turnpike at 10pm at night in January and having some debris you couldn't avoid slice your sidewall in 2 places, killing the tire and leaving you stranded on a really narrow shoulder.
