unplug the wires from the reg/rec, should be either 3 yellow, or 3 white wires. with the bike running, check the voltage between every combination of those 3 wires. i forget the exact specs, but if it's the about the same across all the leads, it's fine. the stator puts out A/C power though, so make sure you set the meter accordingly. negative to one wite (or yellow, some bikes are different), positive to another.

i'd be willing to bet it's the reg/rec though. be happy if it is, it's alot less work, and cheaper.
