Autocross courses are made on any big paved surface (ACU-4, Langley, VMP, etc) with cones, and are different every time. They involve solo driving against the clock, usually slower than ~70mph.

Circuits are purpose built road course racetracks where many cars run at a time and top speeds can easily exceed ~130mph. The two nearest ones to HR are Summit Point Motorsports Park outside Winchester VA (http://www.summitpoint-raceway.com) and VIRginia International Raceway outside Danville VA (http://www.virclub.com)

A good "in between" event is Sun Feb 24 at VIR on the 1.1 mile infield Patriot Course. It's a school followed by a fast autocross:
