I'm sure I'll get flamed for this, but I think locking the kid up till he's 21 is a bit extreme. Yes, he needs to understand that there are consequences, but I would like to think that a 12yo can be rehabilitated without ruining the rest of his life. Of course, I don't know this boy's history, maybe this is just one more incident in a long string of violence, then of course some time in a juvenile facility might straighten him out. Hopefully this is a wake up call to his parent's as well, because to me it's obvious that there is a serious lack of discipline/guidance in this child's life.
I agree. Unless there's more background to it, locked up 'til 21 is extreme... There have been people to get less time for actual murder. Lock the kid up for a long while, and let him know this is strike one of three. Two more fuck ups and he stands in front of the firing squad.
