Currently, I'm faced with paying a $900 civil remedial fee under one of Virginias many statues, this one being
46.2-206.1 that took current action, with many residents refusing payment (leading to a revoked licence and warrant for arrest) while others write their congress men to support a bill of repeal. These fees are commonly x2 or even x3 the original violation fee. Personally I think these fees are rediculous, and a far-fetched cost to the common resident.
Has any one else been faced with these fees? Whats your opinion? Do you support them being repealed or modified in any way?
I think you may mean "
Unconstitutional"? They get around that by calling them fees in-lieu-of fines. But yes, they need to go in the circle file. The city of Newport News has actually debated on asking the GA and the Gov. to repeal the Hampton Roads Transit Authority along with repeal of the fees. I'm not sure where what decision was made.
