I don't think a pistol grip would be a good idea for home defense... especially by the wife (unless she can beat your ass). Then she would be more of a man than you are, and anyway, that's a whole 'nother discussion...
Go with something that you can shoot properly and butt against your shoulder. Maybe a regular rifle or shotgun. And, any gauge gun will stop anyone (unless they have armor on, or there is just too many of them) as long as you buy the right bullets/ammo and get your aim on point.
