Or, you could have a thermostat-regulated solenoid that circulates the cold water destined for the hot water tank through the roof heaters first (but not at night or when it's very cold out). This will decrease the amount of electricity required to heat it up in the tank.
The efficiency really depends how you use your hot water, as this is only really effective if you take showers while the sun is shining.
