In regards to the online class:
You basically have a list of chapters you need to read through, you can't just skim through and take the test. Each lesson requires you to stay on the page for a certain amount of time, in which you take the "lesson challenge" or something wack like that. If you miss one question, you repeat the lesson.
Once you complete all lessons, you have to go to one of several locations for the test (I had to go find a local kinkos for mine). When you pass, it prints a certificate and sends the info off to the dmv.
It wouldn't be so bad if they didn't make you stay on the page for 10+ minutes at a time. I've had both classes, and I prefer the classroom. I was lucky enough to have a cool teacher that let us take breaks/smoke breaks, and eat/teach outside. Not to mention we took the test orally and got out early.
Then again, it's a gamble because you may get some douche that takes the class super serial.
I think I still have the link bookmarked at home for the online class, I'll take a look around when I'm home.
How long did it take you to complete the whole online test?
