Second - You can not take out the pistons from the top by just removing the head, you need to remove the block as the oil pan needs to be removed and you can't do this w/ the trans attached. Second, its easier to torque everything properly back down w/ the engine out of the car. Its a LOT of work to change pistons, and unless its for some strength gain, its just easier to find a used engine, and use that. I can quote you a price to do that.
Why do you need to remove the tranny to take off the oil pan? I used to have to change pistons out every other week because of blown ring lands. Its very simple
