While they are a commitment.......they aren't that bad. You would start off with a smaller cage, something too large when they are little can stress them out, and is just unnecessary. once they get larger, you can build or buy something for them around 2x4x2. when they get big enough to eat rabbits and guinea pigs they really only need to eat every 2 weeks, some people go every 3 weeks to a month. So, 8 bucks for a big guinea pig, every 2 weeks......it really isn't that bad.
