I seriously don't know how this issue always seems to confuse people -- the main reasons that 'exhausts are illegal' (that phrase is misused and confusing) are not for sound purposes. A honda civic comes with an exhaust that's not noticeable -- when the owner modifies that exhaust (which is ILLEGAL) and it makes it louder, that lets an officer know that the exhaust has likely been modified. Harleys don't get pullec over because those loud exhausts are STOCK -- they are not modified. Even if an owner does modify it, an officer with anything less of a complete knowledge of Harley Davidson exhausts wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a stock exhaust, and a modified one. Aftermarket exhausts for motorcycles do not come with a huge red sign saying "this is a modified exhaust" to alert police officers. But when someone puts a huge, loud exhaust of their civic, they're just asking for attention.
Whether anyone 'agrees' with the laws on exhausts or not is besides the point. Cops are not legislators, they exist to enforce laws. They're humans and fuck up just like the rest of us. But it is their right, and their job to give tickets for vehicle violations, and if you choose to break the law, you're putting yourself at risk of paying the consequences.
yeah ok, when was the last time you seen a STOCK exhaust Harley? When cops pull you over for an exhaust ticket, it says in violation of exhaust not be a factory part. but in the comments they put "loud". so please don't give me any fucking shit about they are just doing their job. they are ALL profiling imports and sport bikes. by law no automotive can alter their suspension that means "EVEN LIFTING TRUCKS". but they don't get pulled over because those are not imports. an experience i had, on my 6th exhaust ticket and 2nd altered suspension ticket (by the way i've always beat it in court) a mustang rolls by at like 5k rpms followed by a lifted truck cruise by and i looked at the cops and said oh but they are within standards right. when i went to court there was 8 other people with exhaust tickets(all of which were import cars). i proved to the judge that cop was profiling, he looked like an ass in court. and since i have a greddy exhaust, which is 50 state legal, i got off with that. cop couldn't prove that i lowered my car cause my car looks low from stock, had pics of a stock teg with mine and couldn't tell the difference. so basically i got off.
cops in va will always profile imports and sportbikes. so don't give me any of that doing their job bullshit, there are REAL bad drivers out there speeding, reckless driving, NOT ACCELERATING IN THE FREAKING ACCELERATION LANE, etc. but yet they are gonna give me a muffler ticket while my car is parked. and they are doing their job. yeah ok
only way you won't get pulled over is if you buy a domestic.
