it shot a good 3 feet away from us. the vise grip was used to hold the piston in the shock still. the bolt that needed to be taken off was attached to it. so while trying to loosen the bolt the piston would spin with it. and the vice grip got wedged inbetween the two. so my only guess would be that it helped from them really flying away.
