Dodge has the best Engines, Ford has the best bodys, and Duramax has the best transmission. period.
If your just starting and want to do everything with a turn of some wrenchs and all mechanical go find a 12v Cummins. If you want electronic more up to day tuning, get yourself a Common Rail or a 6.4 Ford if you can afford it. Im not a Chevy fan but never worked on one. I purchased my 12v reg cab long bed 4x4 for 6k with 180k miles. There are 12v out there with well over 200k some even 300k.
i have to disagree with you on the transmission. in stock form, the allison is a weak transmission. i know several that had problems with them slipping the transmissions with a tuner and exhaust on the truck.
