NASA and VMSC both do autocrosses in Richmond. There are even more if you're willing to drive to VA Beach or DC, but I'd recommend trying it locally first.

Autocross is lower speeds (typically 60mph though you may briefly top that on some courses), with emphisis on handling. It might not sound fast, but believe me, it feels a lot faster when you're out there! It really is a lot of fun. And practically no risk- you're on course one at a time, and the only thing to hit are cones, and they almost always buff right out. Consequently, people drive closer to (and over) the limit a lot more in autocross than time trials or HPDEs (which is both fun and educational), and plowing off-course or spinning out are not a big deal since there's nothing to hit. There's virtually no risk of crashing.
