Look also in the technical section, but you'd probably be looking at something older than 2000 (MKIII), and most likely the older 12v vr6. Make sure the timing chain and guides have been replaced, as it's a pain to do, and a rather expensive job if you can't do it yourself!

They're good vehicles, and as with any, have their problems. You will get bit by the modding bug- vr's sound wonderful with an aftermarket exhaust. There's plenty of aftermarket and support through the vortex, and I wouldn't say that they are extremely quick, but can comfortably hold their own.

The modding thing gets expensive: my 93 cabriolet is slammed, has just basic bolt-on's, and working on redoing the interior and replacing all the lighting with L.E.D.'s.. good luck!!!
