Well microfiber is supposed to be the best and not create any swirls. I'll wash a car w/ Dawn, clay bar it, then apply the polish or wax, let haze, wipe off w/ a 100% terry towel then buff it with my orbital using a foam bad. It'll make it look like you're running a hose on it.

The trick to a good shine is paint prep. You need to clean and clay the car for the best results. Even "junk" wax will look great if the car is properly prepped. If you have swirls or scratches use some mild rubbing compound or swirl mark remover before you polish/wax.
