Satellite radio is definitely outside of my realm of expertise.

I did a little research on the Corvette factory XM antenna location since Corvettes have no external antennas on them (at least C5's and C6's). Turns out the antenna is mounted inside the car on top of the driver side rear wheel well. Some guys are having luck with mounting them on the inside of the rear hatch glass also. Now I know you probably aren't putting this in a vette but since it seems to be working inside a plastic fender, your proposed location of under the plastic wiper cowl may work fine and might warrant a try. Just some info.
