yea R1 is a pretty bad starter bike... i've had a couple friends start on them, and amazingly they are all still alive, but i think its just too much money, too much power for a first bike

, entirely too much power for a newbie, 600s the way to go for a starter, and even for an experienced rider, the 600s are in competition with the 1000s these days.
