well the original scramblers were Triumphs... not exactly the backbone of reliability.
They're British... They had questionable electrics, but the core of the bike is extremely reliable. Triumph parallel twins are 100k mile motors.

You sir are correct. It's a generic term for any street bike that was converted for off-pavement use.
