Default Starting our own autox club?

What are you thoughts on this.

it's takes a lot of work (but less if it's done efficiently) and money. here are the two emails to/from greg, so....

TO GREG
Hey Greg, this is David Martin (in the Black Honda Accord) that's always at Pungo autoxing.

I'm not sure if you've noticed, but there are quite a few racers out there (including me) that are from the dragva.com message board. The board itself is rather large, but most the members only deal with drag racing, while not knowing even what autox is.

Just the other day, I posted about having a "DragVA.com only Autox," and so far have gotten a good amount of responses about the idea. You can read the responses at these two links...
http://www.dragva.com/forums/showthr...&threadid=4795
http://www.dragva.com/forums/showthr...&threadid=4819

As you can see, we have quite a few ideas gathered up, and quite a bit of interest over the past day. Well, I'm turning to you to get information, and maybe some help on holding this event. The event goal is to bring more interest into the autoxing world with the current car enthusiast scene out there right now. I know there is so much paper work and other topics that need to be addressed like insurance/regulations/etc. I don't know how likely it is, but I was hoping maybe we could use Pungo for the event. I was thinking about the BCC and how they are very similar to the ODR events held, but I'm not sure what goes on behind the scenes.

I'm sort of hoping that if it's a real good success, then maybe we can have more events, or a series, but that's just wishful thinking for now. DragVA events in the past have had turn outs in the triple digits previously, so hopefully, this can get off the ground.

Can you please shine some light towards me, and possibly help me on this project. If we get it going, it will be a joint project w/ a numerous amount of us from dragva.com.

Looking forward to your response
David Martin

FROM GREG

David,

The concept of an "All DragVA.com Only" auto-x isn't going to be easy to
pull off. Just like ODR, the Beachcombers Corvette Club uses a sanctioning
body for their auto-x's. The Beachcombers use the National Council of
Corvette Clubs (NCCC) for their sanctioning body so they cannot deny entry
to one of their events to anyone that is an NCCC member. To do so would
violate their charter with the NCCC. The SCCA discourages local regions
from co-sponsoring events with non-SCCA organizations. There is too much
potential for negative press for the SCCA if the co-sponsoring organization
turns the event into a fiasco.

The owner of Pungo airfield won't allow the site to be used for auto-xing
without being co-listed on the insurance certificate of the club hosting the
event. (No insurance, no event!) K&K Insurance, Motorsports Division, is
the biggest insurer for auto-xing, but I'm not sure that they would even
consider insuring an event unless the host club was incorporated and had a
set of enforceable rules for running the event.

We might have some luck pursuing concept this via two different venues. The
first is Langley Speedway. They are currently exploring holding auto-x
events are their track during the week nights and possibly on Sundays if
there were enough interest. I can forward the info to them to see if they
are interested. The second approach would be to add all DragVA.com teams to
those being formed by Beno Rubin for the local auto-x's. The DragVA.com
racers could then compete at the local auto-x's and compete separately among
themselves. You could devise your own scoring system to suit your purposes.

I think that the concept bears exploration, but an "All DragVA.com Only"
auto-x at Pungo seems to be out of the question right now.

TO GREG

Greg,
Well, the idea was to get more of the drag racers involved in autox (which i'm sure a lot of them would get hooked because its a lot more fun in my opinion). A lot of us really want to get it off the ground.

We've been trying to get ppl to come out for a while, but they never make it. Having a dragva event would make more of them want to come out and try it at least once.

With the Langley idea, that might be ok, but I've raced at Southside Speedway (in Richmond) before, and it wasn't really a fun event, because there is no space for real autoxing. I've never been to Langley, but I have the impression that it is the same idea there. We want to put on a really fun event so we can hook people like using bait.

As far as insurance goes, I'm scared to ask, but how much is it?
How much is the timing equipment ODR uses?
How much are cones?

We are just really urgent to get the event (and maybe future ones) off the ground. The more information we have the better.

I'm also going to talk to Curtis Staples, president of TSCC and see what he has to say, and if he can provide any useful information to me.

Thank you for you time,
David Martin

Langley is very similar to Southside. Langley has a paved (concrete)
go-kart track as part of the infield behind the pit wall. ODR used to
auto-x at Langley before we used Pungo. You're correct in that Pungo is
more open - therefore more fun.

> As far as insurance goes, I'm scared to ask, but how much is it?

You would have to get a quote from K&K's Motorsports Division
(www.kandkinsurance.com). ODR's insurance is part of the SCCA's insurance
package so I really don't know how much a single event would cost. We pay
the SCCA a $3 per entry insurance fee.

> How much is the timing equipment ODR uses?

We use RaceAmerica's (www.raceamerica.com) AC4 autocross timer. Our package
cost around $1300. ODR's old timer is available for $200. It only times
two cars at a time though.

> How much are cones?

The SCCA soft polyethylene cones are roughly $20 each in lots of 20. (I say
roughly because we have to pay shipping and the SCCA just moved their HQ
from Denver to Topeka so the shipping should be less now.) You can buy
safety (traffic) cones locally for less. It might be better to rent the
cones than buy them so you don't incur a large expense up front.

That may be the best bet since TSCC is a local club without the encumbering
rules of a national sanctioning body.

You'r welcome David. Hope that you can work this out. It should be a fun
event.

so what do you think??
