eh...you can (but only if you disconnect the driveshaft to the rear on DSM's) subarus you cant (transfer case is made into the transmission, and there is no provision to uncouple them) most SUV's that are the auto 4wd (new process 231, 241, and a few other cases) you have to have the wheels off the ground, aka rollback.
Audi/VW you have to rollback. it is always best (and quickest) to rollback an AWD car, but if you know your system, you can do it with a standard wrecker.
in a pinch, DSM's can be towed from teh front with the rear wheels on the ground, its four bolts to unhook the driveshaft after the trans case.
