NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Virginia State Police are investigating a five-vehicle crash that left one person dead and two others injured.
The crash happened around midnight Friday near the Military Highway exit. State Police spokesperson Sgt. Michelle Anaya told WAVY.com the accident involved two motorcycles, a pickup truck and two cars.
Anaya said the two motorcycles, a 2006 Suzuki and a 2008 Yamaha, were traveling at a high rate of speed.
According to Anaya, the Suzuki motorcycle, driven by Dwayne Bubose, lost control and struck the pickup truck. This caused Bubose to drop his motorcycle. He was ejected.
Simultaneously, the Yamaha motorcycle, driven by George Nipper, struck the Suzuki motorcycle and ejected Nipper and a female passenger.
Two cars hit Nipper and he died on the scene. Nipper was 41 years old.
Nipper's passenger was injured but is expected to recover.
Police said alcohol was not a factor in the accident.
Bubose, 41, of Virginia Beach, was charged with reckless driving. He also suffers from non-life threatening injuries.
The drivers of the two cars and pickup truck were not injured and will not be charged.
The interstate was shut down for several hours as police investigated. Traffic was diverted to the Military Highway exit. All lanes reopened just before 5 a.m.
