Stupid? Depends on the location and speed. I've done it many times, and safely. It's only dangerous if you are going too fast to react. Keep it under 10-20mph and it's fine.

It's stupid. The lane dividers aren't meant for travel, there's no reason outside of imminent danger to do that. Not to mention it's illegal everywhere around here.
