The only differences that I'm aware of are the heads and "strength" of the motor. Big block heads flow alot more, have bigger valves and etc. They're generally for more torque related duties. Small blocks like to rev a bit more (stock) and are more HP related.
That's just my understanding, by no means quote me on that.
