Whoa! I've seen a small bubble like that on a friends tire, but nothing like that! How do you get these things? I always just assumed its cuz he sucks behind the wheel.

They're called impact breaks. A rupture to a tire resulting from the shock of striking a pothole, rock, curb, etc.
