Most hibachi food does taste very similar. I have always really thought that the only reason Japanese places do Hibachi is because they know that there are always going to be people who will flat out refuse to try any kind of sushi. So that when you are going out with people and one of them is like, "No I don't eat sushi." You can say, "Oh they have other stuff don't worry." Some of the Hibachi chefs do put on funny shows though.

Sumo's - -1 for the atmosphere....they need a renovation, but if you smoke you can in the front lounge and they're mixed drinks are strong. Their dressing is too peanut buttery tasting. You have to bend down to get into the cramped rooms and the bathroom wasn't clean. They're not very attentive or friendly for that matter except for the chefs themselves.

Wasabi- brand new, open space high ceilings/great atmosphere, fantastic service/very attentive, great food at a decent price. They've been posting coupons for 50% off 2nd entree in the Val Pak mailers too to generate business. They're a new establishment and you can see they're working hard to gain clientele.

Shogun- best overall dining experience hands down.

There's more to it than just the food, folks.

that makes no sense. there's alot of money in the hibatchi style dining, as it is quite popular in the states which is why it is offered. people get entertained and they eat good (not very/at all japanese) food in a "japanese" type environment. Real quality sushi and restaurants are expensive and real japanese food probably wouldn't go over well here (even though its absolutely delicious)

Well, let's be honest. Most "real" japanese food is disgusting.

Jellyfish? Octopus? Fish heads?

I mean, there's a lot of good food, but much of the traditional japanese food is the peasant class food and it's food of necessity, and it's not good.

while we're on the subject of japanese restaurants, be warned of Kotobuki on 21st st. in Norfolk. there was an ant floating in my drink, and when we complained to the waitress, she laughed and said it was a kamikaze ant. it's a shame too, because the lobster rolls and flaming volcanos were amazing!
