I understand wanting a good deal, but it's been like 3 months, just get the kid a bike. It's not going to cost a mint, it's not like he is going to be on it for the rest of his life, he will outgrow it and move on. . .hell, if you got it on the month this thread was started, he might be bored with it by now lol

Well, he is 13 now, right? Get him involved in the decision making process. If it is something he is into/wants to get into, go over the pros/cons, and let him get involved. He will take better care of it, have more respect for it, and won't be so quick to loose interest if he has a vested interest. He's a "young adult", treat him as such.

Ahhh, Ok, I misunderstood the original Post. My bad.

I would go for the 85, or a hundred. . .he will outgrow it, but it's a good trial period to see how he takes to the machine. If he has a good head on his shoulders, something a little bigger will have a longer shelf life, and teach how to respect a machine, not just get on it, open it up and pop the clutch(like he will get to on an 85/100). Again, a LOT of personal variables involved.

Two completely different bikes my man.

That KX85 is a 2 stroke rocket that he could potentially get himself into some trouble on.

The TTR125 on the other hand is a 4 stroke woods bike, probably MUCH better to learn on and he could ride it for a bit before he gets the bug to just go fast all the time.

Even though one's an 85 and one's a 125, believe me that 85 is a ton quicker than the TTR. Different kind of torque as well.

I'd go for the TTR125 just because he's a beginner, and it looks to be in great shape. Offer him $900 cash he'll prob bite.

I didn't even realize the 2-stroke, good point too. A LOT more responsive, and "peppy", than a 4. Also, i think a 4 is easier to maintain, and you don't have to mix oil/gas, iirc.

Absolutely. 2 very big advantages for the 4 stroke.
