NEWPORT NEWS - A Newport News man died this morning when he lost control of his car on an exit ramp from Interstate 64.
Robert Fields, a 33-year-old Newport News resident who lived on Minton Drive, was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, 35-year-old Jerry Vineyard of Newport News, was taken to a local hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.
The accident happened just before 10 a.m.
Police spokesman Harold Eley sad Fields was driving a 1990 Nissan 300ZX at a high rate of speed and attempted to exit westbound I-64 onto J. Clyde Morris Boulevard headed toward Newport News. He lost control of the car and spun into the guardrail, knocking down a utility pole and coming to rest amid a group of trees adjacent to the exit ramp
