i know i need to get on the ball with my certs. i'm on a time line crunch tho. im on unemployment (laid off from my previous job in may) which runs out in september. after that i can apply for a 2 month extension, and after that i'm cut off from everything. it's coming down to the wire, and i REALLY want to land a job SOMEHOW in the field, i dont want to have to apply to menial jobs just to pay the bills if i dont have to.
35k will pay the bills... I made a little more when I was still in college for my IT degree. Just means you rent a room, rather than a 1BR apartment until you get a pay raise.

I know down here in hampton roads the IT job market sucks. I have a+, network+, and mcp on 70-270. I cant find a job, plus i have experience. However, things are starting to pop up on job sites like dice.com/indeed.com, so im hoping that means things are getting better.

It's the same way here in central Va, I have pretty much the same resume (I have CISCO instead of MCP). I keep finding jobs up in MD and in DC but I really can't be going that far.

Any interest in networking?
I would acquire a CCENT or CCNA if you can.

They require a bit of studying to pass (from when I took my CCENT) but well worth the time if you invest it. CCNA is a great entry-medium level certification that will get you in the door at a ton of places.

But don't ever forget the help desk. Those are the best roots to have, because essentially, everything revolves back around it.

Wow you're like 2-3 blocks from me then. I work in the 600 Watergate building (by the Kennedy Center) as the Network Systems Admin for Atlantic Media Company.

I'm thoroughly burnt out when it comes to help desk work. My last gig was with a small Sun Microsystems integration/reseller shop and then I migrated here to "The Atlantic" after we hit the ground hard. I haven't been here but more than a couple of months, but what do you have going on at the State Department?
