Once a gasket cold flows when it's been in one spot for a while, chances are that it isn't going to seal that well if it's reused especially if it gets moved slightly. I don't see a problem for short term use, as long as the gasket is above the level of oil in the pan so it isn't submerged. The worst that can happen is a minor oil leak. That's a really sweet seal for an OEM application, I'm impressed.
I think that's perfectly sound advice, as long as it isn't in an area with rotating parts.
Good. Then my shotgun meet is back on. You're welcome to come and I'll pay your range fees for all your help (bring your own shells though, not made of money lol).
Not sure if I bear a risk of it moving - held on by 6 bolts.
No... If you shift or slide the seal within the seal channel when the pan is removed, that's what I was talking about. It would be hard to keep the seal in the same place as it was before.

Hmm. Maybe a microscopic movement, but really the seal only goes on one way, and those clips on the side hold it in place unless you forcibly remove it.
I imagine I could also put it back on with 9Nm of torque rather than 8Nm to help counter any small movement, but if the broken bit can stay down there, I can just wait until I have all the stuff I need.

Maybe if it was last week, when I was in the OBX. I'm back in Colorado now. Thanks for the invite though.

Well, in the future, it's pretty much every week (though not last week because when I e-mailed the mailing list nobody wanted to shoot in the 103F weather).
