CV'S, definitely, one way to check to see if they are bad or not is to turn your wheel all the way to each side and listen for that grinding sound, so it sounds like thats it

Lift the front tires off the ground and wobble the tire side to side, and push the top and bottom of the tire in and out of the tire well. If there's lots of free play check your cv's.

okay, sounds like a or both cv axles going/gone bad. the other thing you should really check is ball joints. if you don't fix the cv joint(s) you'll get stuck somewhere. i've also seen cv joints tear some stuff up pretty badly: even to the point where the car got 'catapulted'.
some other questions:
does the car make clicking noises when you are backing out of a parking spot or even going forward?
do you get a strange wobble when your steering wheel is turned all the way in one or the other direction?
