question about the rx-8
I was reading the specs of the 6 speed and the HP was 238. Now is that base or wheel?? I was curious if it changed b/c it is a rotary engine.

That was the crank power. The original power rating was higher but they overestimated it so they lowered it. It's still the same because even though its a rotary its still powering the exact same flywheel/transmission/drivetrain.

It was 250 crank HP, but just like the Miata, Mazda likes to overrate its engines. So they had to bump it back to 238. But, if you bought one from Mazda and then contacted them about it after it was announced, they would buy your car back from you for full price, or give you 500 bucks and free service to 50k.

Yes they do handle very nicely, but the hp problem doesn't just stop there. They usually dyno at about 185 to the wheels which is 22% Drivetrain loss which is if its true, unacceptable at best. The highest ive seen was with 103 octane gas and that was at 196 rwhp which is still a 17% drivetrain loss, If the engine is actually a 238 hp engine. I think that even with the deduction from 250 to 238 its still over rated.
