Strange Noise from crank/balancer area
I just dropped my new longblock h22 in and bolted it up to the tranny. runs super good. pulls hard, smooth idle etc, timing is right on the money.
have a strange noise at idle though. it sounds like either an a) too tight of belt, b) bearing, c) a bolt loose?
thats just the options to describ the sound.. almost like a squacking seagull but deeper.
I wish iu could record the sound.
i think it might be the balancer belt on too tight? not sure. if anyone has performed a h22 timing belt change lemme know if they have heard what i'm descirbing.
and it only does it at idle... <780rpms soon as it hits 780 rpms it goes away completely.

Re: Strange Noise from crank/balancer area
was just informed of idler bearings. hopefully its just rust on one and such. cuse the noise goes away as soon as you give it any gas. if it were a belt hte noise would change progressively with the acceleration of hte belt. it just stops when you hit 780 rpms all together. anyone heard of an idler bearing going bad or making racket?

Re: Strange Noise from crank/balancer area
i think i know what you are talkin about my buddy has a b16a in his crix and it make the worst sound at idle but sounds good under load....we changed the water pump, timing belt tensioner and the timing belt and it still makes that metal grating sound at an idle i thinks it may be the alternator but im not too sure of it....

it kinda sounds like the auto tensioner, but mine was more of a ticking/flapping noise. Are you using the auto tensioner or did you change to a manual?

On dsm's the balancer is 2 pieces held together by rubber. I have seen them come apart and make some funny noises. Is yours the same idea, if so I'd look into replacing it.
