white stuff on new cars?

white stuff on new cars?
i always see new cars sitting outside of dealerships with this white film/wrapping on body panels. what exactly is this for, or do? im always like wtf is that!

logic would guess that it's to protect the panels/paint that are more prone to getting hit with debris during transport.

ohhh.. i thought it was some sort of cover you put over new paint to help protect it...but then again if that was the case why is it only covering certain panels? thanks for the info..
