You need to find out what you can get qualified for. That is going to be determined by your income/credit. Then you need to shop around and find a house in your area that fits your needs and budget. From there, all the paperwork is taken care of by lawyers and real estate people. Sure, you have to do a lot of signing, but I don't think you'll have to do much footwork. They setup everything for you.
Where do you work and how long have you been there?
EDIT: Even buying a condo or townhome is a good purchase. They'll fit into your budget better, I think. They have advantages and disadvantages, though. If you want a good sized yard, you won't get it. haha I don't think their value goes up nearly as fast as a regular house either.

My interest on my mortgage is $960ish in va beach, I generally pay more. The key for getting a home is getting your downpayment together.
A house is stressful at first b/c when/if shit breaks there nobody to call, you're the one who has to fix/pay for it. I've been in my house for 14 months and it's great now, but the first few months are very hectic. Work all day, then have to paint shit and do the yard, and fix little things... no free time.
Tax time will be nice this year b/c all the mortgage interest and property taxes paid are deductable.
