Im getting pretty sick of my help desk job, have been here for about 1.5 years. Ive moved around to different groups a few times, now currently supporting Mac computers on their products. I dont feel like I am being productive, Im not learning anything, every day is a drudge, just trying to get through call after call untill end of my shift.

I went to tech school, havent got any certifications, but really need to get off my butt and get my A+ and N+ and possibly CCNA.

Id really like to get into a non-helpdesk job again. Previously to working here, i worked at a small computer repair shop doing networking and just repairing computers(hardware and software) for about 2 years. Ive been in the 757 area for about 1.5 years, but I just dont know where to go, I get a Monster.com email every day for IT jobs, but everythign is over my head, theres just a bunch of programming jobs there.

Id really like some pointers on companys to send my resume to. This is a good thread

Is there any room for growth/promotion potential in the help desk field? If so what can you be promoted to, a supervisor? I was going to work for NMCI but my security officer is really slow with my clearance and now I'm having second thoughts if I wanna do help desk.

What would I be able to do to possibly start out? I am looking to get an IT job once I get out the marine corps. Would it be smart to use tuition assistance and get some certs or wait until I get out and find a paid internship that will give me schooling?

Where I work(Canon) there always cross training into different groups, but its all the same thing. It may be ok for the first month or two, but it will get tedious and boring fast. There is an IT department here, but its small, only 5 people in it and they only hire once in a blue moon. I already applied for an IT position once, passed the test, got an interview, but they hired somebody else with more certifications

They hire supervisors as well, but the company is so big, they have technicians that have been here for 5+ years that usually get those positions. A supervisor here isnt what I want to do, its not related to the IT field at all.

Id be perfectly happy with my old job, just doing basic hardware repairs/upgrades and removing virus/spyware crap, I had fun at that job. But its back in Iowa where I used to live. If anybody needs an IT guy, let me know!

how much experience do you require for an internship. I have about a year left of school, and I really want to have a good solid year of experience under me before i graduate. i've also had two different help desk positions but i seriously cannot stand it. i don't learn anything and just want to get in and get out. any help would be great. thanks.

MarineNet and NKO has prepwork for some certs, and my S6 chief said that if you're active duty, the marine corp will pay for you to take the cert test which is great because it cost lots of money to get your cert.
