if i could do it again, id start with a SV650... if you get like a 00 or 01 jiggy 600, you'll be fine, but after getting a 1000, i now understand why they say start smaller then 600.
just get a lil 500 to putt putt around on man, u can prolly pick one up for under $2500 and ride it around till you feel good, when you get bored, start hitting the twisties with some big guys, your gonna get smoked on every straight but if your a fast learner and are learning the right things you'll be right on em in the corners and braking, like move mofo... then get left again.. when u get to that stage, start shopping for a 600.
If you dont want to do that, start with a SV650...
But most MOST importantly... please, and i say please, get some proper gear... full fingered leather gloves, a good lid, that isnt 10 years old, a jacket, leather preferably, but u prolly wont.. and some dedicated riding boots, not vans, fuk that, "i cant feel the shifter bs" i ride in $300 race boot everytime, its bs... be safe be smart, take your time and dont rush it, it'll come to you... if you rush it, you'll only fall sooner and harder.

and i dont want to halfass anything. what are some good brands that are good bang for the buck, but not so cheap its shitty
when i was looking at the one sticky thread, i had just started looking through the links and eye shopping.
and i would prefer to ride with some people who know what there doing so i can watch and learn and just listen.
ime on of those peopel that learn better by watching and doing
all i wear is alpinestar... i hate Joe Rocket.. and i cant afford Dainese..
if i dont see it being worn by pros, im not wearing it.
but my buddy wear feildshere * (spelling) he likes it, and yes it looks good.
Frank thomas, cheap leather, but very good, extremely popular in the UK.
a few others...
as for watching and doing... well, thats good and bad. get one of them books or 2 i mentioned.. read up.. they explain a lot of little things about riding most of us would forget, or cant explain.
then if you get a bike and im still in VA, pm me... im by no means a pro.. but id like to think of myself as pretty good at explaining shit

T226, Im probably going to come of as an ass, but oh well i can put in my thoughts. PERSONALLY of all the 600's your looking at, really dosent matter whos name is on it. Just pick what FEELS good. I also would suggest NOT to get a 600 for your first bike. Because it WILL slow your learning process on a bike. You WILL be scared of it on the street, and that probably goes for whatever bike you get at first. The example of the S10 and M3 is true, with dirt and street bikes. But think about this........ Your on the street in your M3(600ccsportbike of your choice here)...are you just going to whack it into the first corner you see and hope you know enough about stopping/counter steering to save you... OR are you going to whack your S10 into a corner(enter..ninja250/500 or comparible sportbike) and use what you know to live on that. The smaller bike is going to win hands down. Its going to get you to A-B with a little less drama/ gut wrench. All im saying is when your new and on a 600-1000+cc bike you are going to hold back and be scared. Why not flog the hell outta a 250-500 smaller bike...get good and learn something.....then flog a sportbike. Its all about the learnign curve You also said your in the pricing and money stages and you wanna do it right the first time. GREAT. Go buy a $2500 SV or ninja500. A guy once told me ""why i wanted to go buy a newer 600, he said you dont plan on riding long?"" Obviously you like bikes and plan on riding for awhile, so why cant you spend a year on a Ninja 250 get good, then progress? Pick up a bike for 2500 ride it for a year, then sell it to another guy learning for minimal loss, then use that as a downpayment on something else.
Ridden dirtbikes for awhile, and i had the chance to start learning to ride streetbikes. First bike I rode was a 99' Ninja 6R (was my buddys first bike when he was18) I was scared, i was afraid to use the brakes, and tons of other stuff. Now i realized its not worth it. Hes gotten into 1 major accident and two minor accidents in 2 years. And over 150,000 in bills to fix him. He is still riding to this day. All im saying is you said you want to have cost practicality/ money stages. All that goes out the window when you wreck. and you WILL eventually there is NO way of getting around it. But back to the story, i stopped riding that bike, even thoguh it is A LOT tamer than newer 600 ive ridden. And my first bike will be a used SV in a few years. IM sorry for the rant and if I came off as an ass, but I just been too many hospital rooms and funerals cause people are dumb and arent honest with themself. (NOTE: people are dumb and a lot of accidents are due to excess/speed and just plain old dumb. I am NOT saying you are like this, just going from what i have seen.) PLEASE go to this website. ride2die.com and take a look, it will make you be honest with yourself. All of this is coming from a "19 yr old testosterone filled kid". I hope this helped or shed some light on something, and if you want any other info about anything lemme know, im actually a pretty cool guy.

good post "poor s13 driver"
tho id have to say, it goes both way... i know people that got pretty fuctup on 250s and 500s you can die on a scooter damn it, it dont matter, yes the 600 is more likely to get you hurt as far as statistics go, but there are plenty of people that started on a 600 and have been fine.
I definately agree tho, start smaller than a 600, as i said, if i could do it all over id start on a SV instead or a 600RR. So dont go thinking if your on a little biek your invincible or something, them little 250s will still hit 100 easy, and all you need is about a 30mph accident to get seriously fuctup.
Oh and Duder, just like i hate Gixxers i hate joe rocket. Descent stuff, nothing really worng with them, but for me, theyre not comfortable at all.
Plus i dont think Joe Rocket fits people wiht skinny frames as well as the Italian brands.

Oh i definatley agree that ANYTHING on two wheel can kill you, and most bikes will 100 no problem. yes, many people start on 600 or even 1k fine, HOWEVER. On most sportbikes, the riding position is fairly agrressive. The comfort level from being on a stretched out 600 VS a sit up style of a SV/ninja250/500 can save live in of itself. Being in that relaxed nuetral position can pay divedends to a new rider. But i hope you ALL went to that site. ride2die.com... its a reality check
riding position has nothing to do with if a person will learn well or not.
if the bike doesnt fit that person, then thats different. riding position is not a factor. either theyre gonna like it or not, or theyre gonna wreck early or bad or not.
ive seen that site before, i guess its good for scaring away a few potentials that really werent serious...
but i have a friend that lost use of his legs before i really started riding, and i still got on a sportbike. i had one friend become a vegetable when i was way younger and he did cartwheels on his Hurricane back in the day. Never stopped me... basically what im saying is, if someone wants to ride, theyre gonna ride, and only when they cant, or they get a true scare, dont enjoy it, or just dont want to risk it anymore will they quit.
but that site is eye opening tho...

I never said riding position will make you learn or not. What it does do is make you comfortable. If you are comfortable on a bike, all your senses are working together better, less fatigue etc. Most people would say well why would they ride a bike there not comfortable on. I know a lot of knuckleheads that buy a bike just for the look or name, and all i hear them gripe about is man this thing twerks my back out. This is due to improper position most of the time. ALL im saying is every little thing you can do when your a begginer to make you smarter or feel comfortable is good. I dont want this to be a pissing match seeing as the creator of this hasant even posted lately. So im through here my point has been taken
On a side note. Im glad that website scares some people. I just saved some lives if it did. But if you can see that site, understand the consequences, yet still have that passion, then my day is golden. -lyons
