Find a job at a webhost, or find a job as an assistant/tech to a network admin/sys admin..

I'm an MSFT Network Admin/Eng (MCSE, CCNP) and I know a ton of BHN(RR)/Verizon admins, and they hate the place because you're forced to work on proprietary systems.

Half of them are video admins. Aka - your experience won't mean shit outside of BHN.

Most of the BHN infrastructure is Solaris/AIX, which is good to know if you want a system admin position at major companies (banks, etc), but noone will let you touch those systems until you've proven Unix/BSD/Linux administration abilities.

My first "tech" job was in the POS - point of sale - proprietary software industry doing call center work. I was 19 then, am 22 now, and make almost triple what I made then.

i applied for a installer for cox cable, not really waht i want to do but it's something.

The only way to get hired at Verizon now is to look on their web site for an open position and apply. After that, they will schedule you for testing. The pay scale for an outside tech starts around $13/hr and right now tops out at $29.15/hr. It is a 4 yr pay scale, so if you get started off at the bottom, you get a raise every 6 months for 4 years til you are at top pay. After that you get a raise every August that is bargained for in the union contract, and changes yearly. Once you get in, you have access to all open positions and can apply to transfer within.

 

If you want to work at a big company like Verizon or Cox with a HR depatment, you have to go about it like everybody else. Once you get in then it helps to know people.

I'm a FSR III at Cox and I'm pretty happy for now, I plan on working with Cox Business services in the near future.
