Many/most serious high-ish budget race cars, BTCC, JGTC, etc., are all "dry" (actually prepreg) carbon hoods and everything else.
At the very least they're done with vacuum consolidation or resin infusion..
Most of the high end (9FF, Ruff, etc) tuner Porsches are prepreg carbon too, and Enzos, Merc/McLaren SLRs......

Everyone remembers the Japanese hoods that are right on the bad side of having too little resin, and actually look dry. Too little resin means good weight but poor strength and stiffness.. There is a whole range in the middle of too much and too little..

Prepreg is fun, it's pretty casual to work with, just latex gloves and a heat gun, no wet sticky resin. It takes forever to double vacuum bag the inside/outside of a full chassis over nomex honeycomb though. I'm still pretty new to the prepreg game, my years of experience are mostly in wet layup.
If I didn't have this whole military commitment I absolutely would. Trust me, that's one thing I would love to go to school for.

Well you can start messing around with the wet layups at work in the helo shop. No one cares... Like you can't go to school at the same time at least part time?

Not in Colorado I can't. I'm not worried about it out here anyway, maybe when/if I get back.

If you're serious about it, contact "carbonall" on honda-tech

He does 100% carbon fiber stuff and kevlar fiber stuff (hoods, body panels, etc) and last time I chatted with him will do completely custom stuff (obviously costs more).

I've tried getting ahold of them. The problem seems to be just that. As of late, nobody has been able to get ahold of 'em. Apparently people have placed orders months and months ago, sent money, cleared checks, and now they can't be reached. From what I've seen, they appear to put out a good product, but if customer service is going to suck that badly, I'm going to be a little sketch on dealing with them.

Just to make you jealous:
My (Our) whole chassis happens to be made of carbon. Well, except for the roll hoop. It's all (donated) aerospace prepreg carbon too, not a drop of wet resin was used on the car.. Vacuum bagging and oven cure for everything. Carbon differential case too, visible right under the brake light. You can play catch with the chassis tub, it's 45 pounds bare. And yes, those are magnesium BBS wheels, the only set that size in the country..

I wonder if I talked with you at competition as I spent some good time talking with your team...?...
I too hate shitty cf parts...picked up a shitty "Carbon-fiber-glass" hood for cheap as I could find a factory steel or alum hood...I sanded off the gel coat and clear and shaved 4.3 lbs...that was just in BS coat alone!!!
still looking forward to having time to make my own hood, trunk, roof and doors...fenders are on the back burner...
weight savings is a beautiful thing...all will be painted for the same reasons fabrik8 gave.
