How about a Ford 2.3 turbo? The EFI 2.3s have 30# or 35# fuel injectors, inline or square style intakes (get gutted/ported), .390 or .400 lift cam, E6 casting exhaust manifold (get ported), and T3 turbo (rebuilt for $250 and get the turbine housing and exhaust elbow ported). All turbo blocks came with forged pistons. A large majority came with 5 speeds. A good tune up, k&n conical on the vane air meter, 3 inch exhaust and you will be amazed! Check turboford.org for more info! Some turboford members provide services like Intake gutting/porting for $140, exhaust porting usually costs $150 total for the E6 manifold, turbine housing, and elbow.

Are you referring to the older turbo Merkur's or the SVO Turbo Mustang?

Weavil,
Yes, i'm refering to the Merkur XR4ti, Mustang/Capri, and Thunderbird/Cougar. All of these vehicles came with the 2.3 turbo as an option.
You mentioned the Dodge 2.2 as a choice. These are great turbo cars. The 2.3 is an OHC engine like the 2.2 Dodge. Both are very similiar and easy to work on. 2.3's are rear drive, as Dodge is front.
As far as what you want to do with the car:
Merkur XR4ti, handles great! I.R.S! weaker drivetrain.
Mustang GT Turbo/Capri RS Turbo, drag!
Thunderbird/Cougar, oval or drag!
Mustang SVO, auto X

are you going for the $2004 challenge?? I had an idea, I was going to do with my friend, but we decided that we were too lazy and were never going to finish it. Anyways nobody has mentioned a second gen. RX-7 turbo II, bad ass cars!!! The only problem is you need to know rotaries, and rebuilding them is cheap if you can do it yourself.

The Turbo II is NOT a cheap project car at all and rebuilding them to take any more boost isn't cheap either. My friend is going through it right now; that's why his is for sale.

I had an 87 Dodge Daytona Shelby Z. If you can find one of those and you really want to suprise the shit out of people, pick it up...trust me. It HAS to be the Shelby Z though. Any other Daytona was just a normal little econo-sporty car. Basic mods will put a Shelby Z into the 13s.
