Default ticking noise in a 2001 escort zx2

whenever i drive my sisters car, there is a ticking noise when im driving coming from the engine. its not all the time , but it happens a lot, especially when i get into higher rpm's

check tensioner and water pump. I cant remember what other things cause it, drawing blanks right now.

You need to be more specific as to the problem:

-is there a loss of power when the ticking occurs?
-is the noise internal or external to the motor?
-is the ticking dependent on vehicle speed or only engine RPM?
-does the tick occur when the vehicle is cold, warm or both?

The best way to trace a tick is using a long screwdriver or mechanic's stethoscope.

no loss of power
internal
it does it at about 3k rpm. but its not all the time though
it happens randomly
